Welcome to my blog.
I’ve been programming since high school way back in the early 1980’s. I was one of the nerds that worked in the computer lab back when it was actually a lab. We had a progressive high school and as part of the math classes you would have assignments to write programs on little punch cards. My job was to take the stacks of punch cards and put them in the hopper, then turn it on and wait while the programs ran. Typical assignments were things like “Write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 10″ and every so often someone would forget to stop at 10 so you had to listen to the printer and if it was running too long you had to go stop the program manually.
But the best part of the job was that after the class assignments were done, you got to use the computer and YOU ACTUALLY GOT TO TYPE ON THE KEYBOARD! No punch cards for us lab assistants. I was hooked immediately.
Compare that to the world my 3 year old son is growing up in where he moves deftly from the skeeball game on my iPhone to asking if he can see Lightning McQueen again on the Disney site.
I believe that computers are one of the most important factors in the education of our young people. Even our really young people. And that’s where I want to be, learning and experiencing it along with my son.
I hope you will join us for the ride!
